Michael William Sevier Jr., 48, of 505 Cherry Ave., Woodward, was arrested at the intersection of Iowa Highway 210 and Iowa Highway 141 about 6 p.m. Tuesday after briefly resisting arrest.

A Woodward man was detained and arrested Tuesday evening near Woodward after giving a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff brief resistance.

What began as a welfare check on a man reportedly lying under a tree near the intersection of Iowa Highway 210 and Iowa Highway 141 about 6 p.m. ended with Michael William Sevier Jr., 48, of 505 Cherry Ave. in Woodward being arrested on a variety of charges.

“As the deputy was trying to determine if Sevier needed help, Sevier became argumentative and agressive,” according to a statement released Wednesday morning by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office.

Sevier “did not follow several verbal commands,” according to the statement. Radio traffic during the incident indicated Sevier also attempted to escape from handcuffs after “the deputy had to physically take him into custody.”

Additional deputies responded to the incident to assist with the allegedly intoxicated man. The Woodward Police Department also assisted.

Sevier faces one serious misdemeanor charge of possession or carrying of a dangerous weapon while under the influence and five simple misdemeanor charges: interference with official acts, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, failure to possess or display weapon permit and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sevier was previously convicted in 2017 for assault and second-degree harassment, in 2014 for domestic abuse assault, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and second-degree criminal mischief and in 2011 for assault. The crimes occurred in Polk County.

He was convicted in Polk County in 2009 and again in 2017 for fifth-degree theft, and his previous convictions for public intoxication were in Polk County in 2018 and 2009 and in Wapello County in 2008.

He is being held at the Dallas County Jail on $5,000 cash bond and will have an initial appearance before a Dallas County Magistrate today.

  1. The deputy was actually aided by a Woodward resident along with two Woodward Academy employees who saw the altercation and stopped and also by Joe Cox, the Woodward Police Chief.
