A boil order has been issued for more than 500 customers of Xenia Rural Water, including some residents of Beaver, Berkley, Grand Junction and Rippey, following a break in a water main Saturday morning.

The break was detected in the rural water district’s distribution system in Boone County on 200th Street east of E Avenue. Service has been restored, but 524 Xenia customers are under a boil order until further notice.

It is recommended not to drink or use the tap water without boiling it first. Bring the water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, then let it cool before using or just use bottled water. Water samples will be sent in for testing to make sure it is cleared of possible contaminants. Xenia will issue a notice once the boil order is lifted.

Residents should bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute and let it cool before using. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Tap water may be used for bathing and similar purposes. Residents under the boil order may also use bottled water until the safety of the city’s water supply is verified.

Two sets of water samples, taken 24 hours apart, will be tested to determine whether the water is safe and when the boil order can be lifted.
