A boil advisory has been issued to customers in Xenia Rural Water District’s North Water Service Area east of the Des Moines River.

BOUTON—Some customers of the Xenia Rural Water District in central Iowa are being told to boil water before consuming after a water main break near Stratford Wednesday night, Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials said this Thursday morning.

The break happened around 7:30 p.m. and drained the water tower, affecting more than 800 Xenia customers. Repairs are underway, but residents are advised to boil water until test results can eliminate the presence of bacteria. The boil advisory will remain in effect until those results come back.

Xenia officials said they hope to have the first round of samples submitted today. A second set will be taken Friday.

The advisory affects customers in Xenia’s North Water Service Area east of the Des Moines River.

Residents should bring water to a boil for one minute and let cool. Boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth and food preparation.
