Ramon “Creamy” Munson passed away unexpectedly on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16, 2024, at his home in Woodward, Iowa.

Ramon was born Aug. 7, 1949, to Byron and Joanne (McKee) Munson. He grew up and lived in Madrid his entire life until 1999, when he built a house outside of Woodward.

Ramon joined the U.S. Army in 1967, serving in Vietnam. He was proudly awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and then joined the Iowa Air Guard.

In 1972 he married Pamela Jesse, and they had three children, Erin, Julie and Eric.

To say Ramon loved the outdoors is an understatement. He was passionate about fishing, hunting deer, ducks, pheasants and mushrooms, SCUBA diving, swimming and taking his kids on the boat to run lines on the river and horseback riding.

He was a hunter safety instructor for several years, and he was a proud member of the Madrid VFW Post 5060 and marched in many parades.

Ramon loved everything about American history and probably knew more about it than most history professors, specifically, the Battle Little Big Horn and the U.S. Civil War. He visited many of the memorials in the U.S.

He was an avid Chicago White Sox fan, spoiled the chipmunks on his back deck, loved watching every western and John Wayne movie ever made. He loved his dog Sophie so much.

Most of all he loved his children, grandchildren, family and all of his friends. He had so many friends.

Ramon is preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Joanne Munson; his brother, Art Munson; and his grandson, Dylan Butler.

He is survived by his daughters, Erin (Jack) Butler of Perry and Julie (Ryan) LaRue of Minburn; his son, Eric Munson of Madrid; his grandchildren, Chloe Butler, Faith LeMaster-LaRue, Lochlan LaRue, Addison LaRue and Owen LaRue; sister, Barb Stuckey of Eagle Grove; brother, Larry Helphrey of Boone; aunt, Vi Munson of California; and several cousins; nieces; nephews; and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held June 28 from 4-7 p.m. at the Madrid VFW Post 5060, 229 S. State St., in Madrid.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Madrid Shop with a Cop program.
