Grand Junction man gets five years’ probation for sexual abuse

A Grand Junction man who pleaded guilty to sexual abuse was sentenced to five years’ probation Friday in Greene County District Court.

Steven Clifford Jones, 29, reached a plea bargain with the Greene County Attorney’s office on charges of third-degree sexual abuse and indecent contact with a child. The 10-year prison sentence for third-degree sexual abuse was dismissed, and Jones was given a probation term of five years.

Jones was also sentenced to 180 days imprisonment on the conviction for indecent contact with a child, with credit for time served, according to court records.

The agreement was accepted by Greene County District Court Judge Gary L. McMinimee. Jones was represented by defense attorney Joel Christpher Baxter.

The charges followed a criminal complaint filed Aug. 22, 2018, by the Greene County Sheriff’s office. According to court records, Jones sexually abused a minor female between February 2015 and September 2017.

As a condition of the plea agreement, Jones was also ordered to to pay more than $3,000 in fines, court costs, court-appointed attorney fees and victim restitution. He will be a lifelong member of the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.
