GILBERT — Class 1A fifth-ranked Gilbert scored three second-half goals to pull away from Perry for a 5-1 win in non-conference girls soccer action Thursday.
Gilbert improved to 9-0 with the win and remain, along with top-ranked Davenport Assumption, as one of only two undefeated teams in 1A. Perry dropped to 4-6 overall with the loss.
Freshman goalie Kimberly Castillo was seeing his first action of the season and was bombarded with shots. Perry statistics credited her with 13 first-half saves and six more in the second half.
The Jayettes managed nine shots on goal, with Kailey Crawford’s unassisted goal in the 28th minute tying the game at 1-all after the Tigers had opened the scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute. A second Gilbert goal, coming with just over 10 minutes left in the half, created a 2-1 lead for the hosts at the intermission.
The margin grew to 3-1 when the Tigers scored in the 55th minute. Goals with just over seven minutes remaining, and with slightly more than four minutes to play, capped the scoring.
Gilbert was a 1-0 winner in the junior varsity contest, with Perry goalie Britney Rivera credited with six saves.
Perry returns to the pitch Tuesday when they host 2A No. 4 ADM at Dewey Field.
