Three died and two were injured Sunday when a semi-tractor trailer struck a passenger vehicle on U.S. Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa.

Three children were killed and a fourth was injured Sunday afternoon when the vehicle they were passengers in was broadsided by a semi on U.S. Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa, according to an Iowa State Patrol crash report.

The driver of their 2010 Kia Rondo, Terrance Joe Edwards, 62, of Cedar Rapids, was driving westward in the slow lane of the interstate when he in effect turned left into the path of an oncoming Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer, driven by Slawomir Nowakowki, 52, of Anaheim, Calif.

Killed in the collision were Oneimus Quaterman, 11, Adaess Adams, 12, and Braden Brown, 12, all of Cedar Rapids. Mason Brown, 11, of Cedar Rapids was injured and transported by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Medical Center. Edwards was also transported to the University of Iowa Medical Center.

Edwards was apparently intending to make a U-turn from the westbound to the eastbound lanes of the interstate and did not see the vehicle approaching from behind, according to the ISP report.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near the 231 mile marker. Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nate Ludwig said the westbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 80 were closed for several hours following the collision.

The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Along with the Iowa State Patrol, the Johnson County Sheriff’s office, Johnson County EMS, University of Iowa Aircare and the Iowa Department of Transportation also responded.
