A work crew from the Dallas County Secondary Roads Department performed repairs Tuesday on the bridge over the Raccoon River on 130th Street west of Perry.

Assistant Dallas County Engineer Andy Case said the repairs are a routine part of the scheduled inspection, maintenance and repair of all Dallas County bridges. He said Tuesday’s work on the bridge on 130th Street involved repairing an expansion joint.

A bridge deck expands in hot weather and contracts in cold weather. An expansion joint is installed between each end of the deck and the concrete approach slabs, and the joint accommodates the movements of expansion and contraction and prevents damage to the bridge’s structure.

The bridge on 130th Street uses seal joints, which are one kind of expansion joint. The seal joints are filled with an expanding polyurethane foam that is waterproof, Case said.
