Gracie Philips dropped nearly four seconds off her lifetime best while winning the 100 backstroke for Perry against Algona at the MCB Pool Thursday.

An illness and an injury had Perry swim coach Jean Dowd faced with a situation Thursday in which she had to try and fill a meet lineup with only five tested swimmers and one freshman newcomer.

As a result, the 20-member Algona squad slipped away with an 84-57 victory at the MCB Pool, but an inside look at the numbers showed plenty of promise for the hosts.

Perry won six of the eight individual races, and not contest one of the two they failed to win, the 100 butterfly. They also won one of three relays, and did so with some swimmers having very little rest between races.

Sarah Vaughn won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 48.73 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 6:31.75, with Jaylene Karolus claiming both the 100 (1:02.95) and 200 (2:18.01) free races, with senior Avery Miner second in the 100 free in 1:11.37.

Gracie Philips won the 100 backstroke in 1:23.68, a drop of nearly four seconds off her own personal best. She was third in the 50 free in 31.74, a lowering of over two seconds from her individual best time.

Also touching first was Amanda Holwegner, who tapped the pad in the 100 breaststroke in 1:28.59.

Miner, Philips, Holwegner and Karolus teamed to win the 200 free relay in 2:01.85, with Miner, Holwegner, Vaughn and Philips second in the 200 medley relay in 2:23.71.

Freshman newcomer Rhylan Agan stepped in to fill out the final event, the 400 free relay, which Perry was considering leaving unchallenged. Agan joined Vaughn, Miner and Karolus in placing third in 6:11.74.

Perry returns to action Tuesday with a visit from Indianola. The dual meet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
