The old-fashioned offense run by Webster City — originally called a spin-back set — compiled 358 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 46 carries as the guests thumped Homecoming host Perry, 50-13, Friday at Dewey Field.
Perry (0-6, 0-2 in 3A District 2) did force, and recover, three fumbles, but Webster City (4-2, 1-1) mostly ran at will, and the Lynx defense throttled any attempt by the Bluejays to run the ball, allowing 25 yards on 25 carries.
Trey Mathis scored on a six-yard plunge and Garrett Whitmore burst free for a 50-yard touchdown as the guests surged to a 13-0 lead midway through the first period.
A returned interception but the Lynx on the Perry 15 yard line, but Wilber Ramirez fell on a fumble on the 10 to stifle the momentum.
Perry went nowhere and was forced to punt, with Cori Alamina taking off with the snap but being stopped on the 15 yard line as the hosts turned the ball over.
Webster City promptly returned the favor, with Charley Guardado landing on the ball at the one-yard line.
The Perry offense continued to go nowhere — and sometimes were in reverse — as the guests took control of the game in the second quarter. Mathis scoring from four yards out, with a two-point run making the score 21-0. It went to 28-0 just over five minutes later when Whitmore skidded into the end zone on a five-yard play.
The hosts punted the ball away with just over a minute left in the half, with runs of 26 yards, of 50 yards, with a 15-yard penalty tacked on, leading to Whitmore scoring from 15 yards for a 35-0 lead at the intermission.
The Bluejays fell on their own fumble in their own end zone for a Lynx safety 71 seconds into the second half, with Jack Van Diest catching a five-yard TD pass from Gabe Humphrey to put the score at 43-0 after three frames.
Jacpb Nelson came up with a big defensive play for Perry in the fourth quarter by snapping up a Lynx fumble at the goal line and running 72 yards before being pulled down at the Lynx 28-yard line.
Nelson then hit Kato Dougan for a pass to just shy of the end zone, with Nelson bulling in for a one-yard score to change the scoreboard to 43-6.
Webster City scored on a three-yard run with 2:34 remaining, but Perry refused to go quietly and marched back down the grid against a continual clock. Their efforts were rewarded when Dougan pulled in a 43-yard pass from reserve Jeremiah Baker, with Baker then hitting Ever Tobar for an eight-yard TD with two seconds to play. Alamina hit the PAT to create the final score.
Baker was 2-of-2 for 51 yards and Nelson 4-12-1 for 65 yards through the air. Dougan caught four passes for 103 yards and Tobar two for 13 and a TD.
Ramirez (12-13), Tucker Strough (3-9), Dougan (1-3), Alamina (1-3) and Nelson (8, minus-3, I TD) all carried the ball for the hosts.
Humphrey was 2-of-3 for 29 yards and a score, with Tyler Olson (1-24) anmd Van Diest (1-5, 1 TD) pulling in passes.
Whitmore (8-133, 3 TDs), Mathis (15-65, 2 TDs), Humphrey (9-65), Parker Rossing (8-62), C.J. Hisler (3-24, 1 TD) and Chase Rattenborg (3-9) toted the rock for the Lynx.
Perry hosts Carroll (3-3, 2-0) Friday at Dewey Field at 7 p.m. The Tigers have lost to Glenwood (44-28), Harlan (34-21) and Fort Dodge (36-10), with wins over Ballard (17-14) and Webster City (28-13). Carroll whipped Boone, 55-13, in week six.
