
Woodward-Granger finished with a 1-1 outcome Tuesday during triangular action at Perry. The Hawks opened with a 66-18 win over Ogden, then came up just short, 40-38, of toppling the host Bluejays.
The duel with Perry began at 106 pounds, with W-G falling into a 24-0 hole before Matthew White posted a pin fall win at 132 pounds in 1 minute, 8 seconds.
Dustin Harney added five points for 16-0 technical fall (5:58) at 152, but the Hawks faced a 40-11 deficit entering the final five matches, the team needing five pins to win the duel.
Cale Pritchett (170) and Kade Polich (182) did their part, recording pins in 1:49 and 4:43, respectively. A forfeit to Devan Brown at 195 and a quick 24-second pin from Cody Fisher at 220 brought the Hawks to within 40-35 with one match remaining.
Heavyweight Alex Evans did his best to complete the comeback, with the Perry and W-G partisans raising the decibel levels considerably in the final 40 seconds at Evans twice neared a pin of Camden Jones, but the Bluejay matmen avoided the stick. Evans was a 2-1 winner, with Perry hanging on for the 40-38 win.
Payton Nixon (106) won by fall, in 1:03, against Ogden, with Brayden Simons (145) pinning his foe in 3:02. Others winning by pin included Harney (152) in 3:02, Polich (182) in 29 seconds, Brown (195) in 5:27, Fisher (220) in 3:58, and Evans (285) in 52 seconds.
Winning by forfeit were White (132), Pritchett (170), Jayden Flugge-Smith (138) and Jon McKeever (160).
Charity Mickels (120) was held winless in two matches at 120, with Tjaden Smeltzer stopped at 126 against Perry and Gavin August at 126 against Ogden.
W-G will compete in the Ogden Invitational Saturday and then be off until hitting the mats at the WCAC Tournament in Panora Dec. 21.
