W-G grapplers second at conference tournament

PANORA — Three Woodward-Granger wrestlers won WCAC championships Saturday, with four others finishing in second place. Those efforts lifted W-G to second place overall with 205.5 points, trailing only Van Meter/Earlham, who totaled 225.5 points.

Panorama was third at 153.5 points, with Interstate-35 (148), Ogden (95.5), West Central Valley (93), Pleasantville (79) and AC/GC (71.5) completing the field.

Top ranked Cody Fisher (15-0) used two pins and a major decision to win the crown at 220 pounds. The Iowa State-bound senior enters the holiday break 161-10 in his career.

Freshman Peyton Nixon (12-2) tallied two pins to claim the title at 106 pounds, with 182-pounder Kade Polich (11-5) needing a combined total of just 2 minutes, 9 seconds to record three pins and win a conference blue ribbon.

Matthew White (11-4) was second at 132, with Dustin Harney (11-5) 1-1 with a decision to place second at 152. Cale Pritchett (10-3) was 2-1 with two pins in placing second at 170, with Devan Brown — who weighed in a 178 — second in the 195-pound bracket after finishing 2-1 with a pair of pins.

Jon McKeever (8-8) had two pins against one loss in finishing third at 160, with Joel Harney (9-6) fourth at 113 with a 1-2 mark and a win by technical fall, while heavyweight Alex Evans (7-7) was 2-2 with two falls in taking fourth place.

Tjaden Smeltzer (6-9) was fifth at 126, Corbyn Atwell (5-6) sixth at 113 and Brayden Simons (3-12) sixth at 145 while Jayden Flugge-Smith (5-10) was unable to pick up a win in two matches.

The Hawks return to action Jan. 4 at the Webster City Duals before hosting a quadrangular Jan. 7 that will serve as Senior Night.
