A sheriff’s office employee at the Dallas County Jail has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard announced Monday.

“The employee is doing great and will return to work at a later date,” Leonard said.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s office employs about 30 people in the Dallas County Jail, and the jail presently houses 23 prisoners.

“The sheriff’s office personnel are doing a great job following the CDC and IDPH guidelines,” Leonard said, including wearing personal protective equipment for the entire length of their shifts.

“Every case we deal with internally will be dealt with on an individual basis with the assistance of public health,” Leonard said. He said other employees will be tested if they show symptoms.
