WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger girls showed a flair for the dramatic in their season opener Monday, scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to upend visiting AC/GC, 5-4, in WCAC softball.

“We showed some resilience,” W-G head coach Jessica Wyant said. “We kept plugging away and eventually it worked out for us. I am very happy with our determination and was pleased to see Rian (Jamison) throw well.”

The guests had scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to open a 4-0 gap, only to see a resolute W-G team rally in their final at-bat.

Chloe Houge walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch to start the inning, scoring after one out when Katelyn Bandstra grounded out in the infield.

Rian Jamison singled, as did Brylee Bice, with a walk to Ava Petersen packing the bags. A wild pitch allowed courtesy runner Abby Pommrehen to score, with Audrey Simmons inducing a base-on-balls to reload the bases.

Allie Moore’s double plated Bice and Petersen to tie the game, with Georgia Simmons the heroine as her base hit sent her sister across the plate with the winning tally.

Emma Anderson had two hits and was struck by a pitch, with Bandstra recording three singles and Jamison two. Bice had two hits, Petersen a hit and a walk (as did Audrey Simmons), with Moore adding her two-run double. Georgia Simmons finished with a pair of base knocks, with Houge walking twice.

Jamison was the winner in the circle, tossing seven innings of four-run, eight-hit ball. She struck out 10 and walked three.

Saige O’Brien was handed the loss. She yielded five runs on 14 hits and four walks while striking out three in 6-2/3 innings.

Alaina Bunoe scored twice and had a double and a walk for the Chargers, with Tori Fuller providing a double, single, run and RBI.

W-G travels to Panorama tonight before hosting Van Meter Thursday for a varsity doubleheader.
