The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines has issued a heat advisory for the Perry area from 1 p.m. Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday.
Heat index values up to 110 are expected across all of central Iowa.
The high temperatures and high humidity might cause heat illnesses to occur, particularly in people working outdoors or taking part in outdoor activities.
The NWS advises Iowans to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out
of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Anyone working or spending time outside should take extra precautions. When possible, schedule strenuous activities in the early morning or evening hours. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
