Waukee man arrested after allegedly slapping, spitting on wife

A Waukee man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly slapping and spitting on his wife and smashing her cell phone.

Matthew Burris, 41, of 580 S.E. Legacy Point Blvd., Waukee, was charged with second-offense domestic abuse assault.

The incident began about 1 a.m. Sunday, when officers of the Waukee Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 500 block of S.E. Legacy Point Boulevard.

The female victim told the officers that Burris allegedly “threw a beer at her and then dumped one on her head” before he allegedly “spit on her several times and then slapped her on the left side of her face,” according to court records.

Burris also allegedly took the victim’s “phone and smashed it against the fence. He then threw the phone over the fence into the neighbor’s yard.”

Burris was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to posting a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Aug. 13 in Dallas County District Court.

Burris was convicted of assault-use/display of weapon in 2013 in Dallas County District Court. He was convicted of first-offense domestic abuse assault in 2017 and of assault in 2018 in Dallas County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
