City crews are clearing storm debris in all Perry neighborhoods.

The Perry City Hall issued an update Thursday afternoon on the progress of cleaning up the town after the Aug. 10 derecho wind storm.

According to the update, city crews have been working extra hours with contractor partners in order to remove storm debris from neighborhoods. Crews expect to finish the area east of First Avenue this week and will then begin picking up the storm debris west of First Avenue.

After crews have gone through the town once, they will make a second full circuit of the town to collect any remaining storm debris on the curbs.

Motorists are advised to avoid parking vehicles on the street in front of debris piles because they make removing the debris extremely difficult.

City crews will also remove hanging branches from trees in the parking or right-of-way. Branches that are too large for city crews to remove will be removed by a contract tree service.

Perry residents may continue to place their storm debris at the curb. Debris does not need to be cut or bundled, just stacked at the curb. To expedite the removal process, residents should bring tree debris to the curb as soon as possible.

After the curbside collection of storm debris is completed, city crews will then start on the special request alley pickups. Residents who find it impossible to get the debris to the curb are asked to call the Perry City Hall at 515-465-2481 and request an alley pickup.

Residents may also continue to bring storm debris to the campground parking lot at Pattee Park. Please note that there is no cost to use the yard waste dump site at Pattee Park or to have the storm debris picked up curbside.

Perry residents should also be aware that residential garbage collection is back to the regular schedule effective Thursday, Aug. 20. Residents may still bring household garbage to the recycle dumpsters at the McCreary Community Building, PHS football field parking lot and of the parking lot east of the Perry Police Department until Friday, Aug. 28.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 31, these dumpsters will once again be used for recyclable drop-off only.

Regular yard waste collection will resume Wednesday, Aug. 26 with collection north of Willis Avenue.

“We are all in this together!” the Perry City Hall statement said “Please be safe and thank you for your clean-up efforts!”
