Two Texas men were arrested early Thursday outside a West Des Moines motel for the alleged possession of drugs.
David Olusegun Yakubu, 29, of 917 Collins Blvd., Cedar Hill, Texas, was charged with first-offense possession of a controlled substance and failure to affix drug stamp.
Jeff Patrick Brown, 29, of 1011 Rosita St., Arlington, Texas, was charged with a controlled substance violation and failure to affix drug stamp.
The incident began about 1 a.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines, where officers of the Clive Police Department made contact with Yakubu and Brown, who were occupying a 2020 Toyota Corolla in the parking lot of a West Des Moines motel.
“Upon making contact, officers detected the odor of marijuana,” according to court records.
A probable-cause search of the vehicle disclosed “more than 42.5 grams of marijuana, a digital scale, several small, plastic baggies and a vacuum sealer,” according to court records.
The officers also allegedly found “a white, powdery substance folded up in a dollar bill” in Yakubu’s pocket that field tested positive for cocaine, according to court records.
Yakubu is held in the Dallas County Jail on an $18,500 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 6 in Dallas County District Court.
Brown is held in the Dallas County Jail on an $10,000 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 6 in Dallas County District Court.
*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Not even 2 ounces of weed plus a tiny bit of coke and two young men are now looking at prison. So how much is this going to cost us to arrest, prosecute and then house them for a couple of years so they get to carry felonies around with them for the rest of their lives?
