Two more Perry school records fell Tuesday as the short-rostered but dynamic Jayette swim team hosted Indianola at the McCreary Community Building Pool.
Perry has only eight girls on their roster, resulting in Indianola able to fill three and sometimes four of the scoring spots in individual events as well as two of three scoring relay positions.
That depth helped offset wins by Perry in two of the three relays and five of the eight individual events. Indianola scored 102 points in the win, with Perry tallying 64 points — a strong total considered the lopsided roster sizes.
Senior Jaylene Karolus dropped nearly 11 seconds off her previous best time in the 200 freestyle to establish a new PHS mark in 2 minutes, 7.06 seconds, .67 ticks faster than Janae Weiser’s standard set in 1998. Lilley Riley was third in the race in 2:19.42.
Freshman Quin Mahler-Moreno set her second new school record in as many meets, doing so in impressive fashion in the 500 free. She touched in 5:20.67, shattering the 2020 PHS record of 5:46.29 held by teammate Sophia McDevitt. The state meet qualifying standard is 5:18.26.
Emily Dowd placed fourth in the event, touching in 6:55.8.
Karolus, Mahler-Moreno, McDevitt and Zoe Hibbert won the 200 medley relay in 1:59.63, with the same quartet the winners, in 3:58.71, in the 400 free relay. Perry was third, in 2:11.25, in the 200 free relay, with Hibbert, Dowd, Riley, and Hailey Peterson swimming for the hosts.
McDevitt won the 200 IM in 2:26.11 and Karolus the 100 butterfly in 1:04.06, with Mahler-Moreno first to the wall, in 1:12.68, in the 100 breaststroke.
McDevitt was second (1:07.34) and Dowd fifth (1:29.84) in the 100 backstroke, with Rilley fourth (30.73) and Peterson fifth (40.93) in the 50 free while Hibbert was third in the 100 free in 1:00.26, a drop of 1.3 seconds off her previous personal best.
