Perry sends full cross country program to Winterset

WINTERSET — Runners from grades 7-12 competed for Perry at the Winterset Invitational Tuesday.

Races were divided into grade categories, with a freshman, sophomore and 11-12 girls circuit completed while boys ran a combined 9-10 and an 11-12 race. Boys and girls both competed in a two-mile middle school race.

Jaylene Karolus was 11th overall in the girls 11-12 race for Perry, crossing in 22 minutes, 1 second. Laurine Calamy (50th, 33:48), Luz Rios (52nd, 36:08), and Misty Gomez (57th, 38:49) also ran for the Jayettes.

Perry does not have any sophomore girls, but had six freshmen race in the grade nine-only girls race. Taryn Nehring (12th, 24:47) and Julie Maylum (21st, 26:10) led the way, with Mylah Meis (27:28), Amy Diaz (28:12), Mercedes Ponce (30:46) and Denise Rivera (32:26) crossing 25-29-32-34 for the Jayettes.

Fithawi Andemichael ran an 18:27 to place ninth for Perry in the boys 11-12 event, with Gannon Meis 21st in 20:43 and Johnathan Chavez 31st in 22:12. Jose Chavez (49th, 26:13), Kyle Hernandez (53rd, 28:31), and Alexis Rodriguez-Molina (58th, 29:29) also ran for the Bluejays.

Five underclassman ran for Perry in the 9-10 boys race. Yonas Andemichael (20:38) was 19th and Owen Myers (22:13) 31st to guide the squad. Renzo Saenz (35th, 22:49), Aidan Carlson (43rd, 23:09), and Mason Hoffman (50th, 25:09) ran the course as well.

Thaddeus Stuart was the first 7-8 Bluejay to finish by crossing 12th in 12:20. Gavin Leslie was 28th in 13:44 and Diego Cardenas 53rd in 16:58, with Kyeo Augustine 54th in 17:19 and Angel Rodriguez-Molina 56th in 19:47.
