To the editor:
I support Marsy’s Law for Iowa. Currently in our state, if someone becomes the victim of a crime, they do not have the same rights as those who perpetrated the crime against them.
Marsy’s Law for Iowa would provide constitutional rights for these victims in our state constitution.
The rights outlined by Marsy’s Law are not controversial. They are something we can all agree on. We all agree that victims of crime in Iowa deserve to be notified of any court proceedings, to be protected from the accused and to be heard at trial.
During the last legislative session, Sen. Jake Chapman and our local legislators made a great deal of progress on behalf of crime victims, but of course there is still more to be done. It’s my hope that during the 2022 session, legislators move forward with Marsy’s Law.
