A New York man allegedly assaulted his wife in their Waukee home late Wednesday and prevented her calling the police.

Abdelgadir Nasr Azrag, 38, of 1015 Pond St., Syracuse, N.Y., was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and obstruction of emergency communications.

The incident began about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of University Avenue in Waukee, where officers of the Waukee Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

According to court records, Azrag and the victim “got into an argument” which “turned physical,” with Azrag allegedly “pushing” the victim “into the sofa” before he allegedly “punched and slapped her with both an open palm and closed fist on the left side of her head” and “pushed her into the closet, causing the closet door to come off of the tracks.”

The victim “dialed and called 911” and “tried to yell into the phone the address that she was at,” but Azrag allegedly “took the phone and hung up,” according to court records.

When the victim “attempted to run to her mother’s apartment” nearby, Azrag allegedly “tripped her, causing her to fall and scrape her right elbow, which was still bleeding on arrival,” and the victim’s “ankle was also swollen from being tripped in the parking lot,” according to court records.

The victim was eventually “able to run to her mother’s apartment and call 911.”

Azrag is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary gearing Oct. 11 in Dallas County District Court.
