Absentee voting begins soon; voter pre-registration deadline nears

All requests for absentee ballots must be made in writing and must be received by the Dallas County Auditor’s office by Monday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. Completed ballots must be returned by Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 8 p.m.

Absentee voting begins Wednesday, Oct. 13 for the city and school board election on Tuesday, Nov. 2, and the pre-registration deadline for voters is Monday, Oct. 18.

Absentee ballots and in-person absentee voting will be available starting Wednesday, Oct. 13 in the Dallas County Auditor’s office at 210 N. 10th St. in Adel from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and continuing until Monday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m.

To receive an absentee ballot by mail, you must make a written request by Monday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. and use a form that is available at the Auditor’s office, or it can be found on the Dallas County website or on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.

All requests for ballots to be mailed must be received by the Auditor’s office by Monday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. Ballots must be returned by Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 8 p.m.

Monday, Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. is also the deadline for voter pre-registration. Voters may still register after the Oct. 18 deadline, but they will need more identification.

Voters who vote absentee at the Auditor’s office after the Oct. 18 deadline or those who plan to register on the Nov. 2 election day at the polls will need to show proof of residence and proof of identity.

Proof of residency must be current within the last 45 days. Hard copy proof of residency (electronic copies are unacceptable) can be accomplished with:

• Property tax statement
• Utility bill
• Bank Statement
• Paycheck
• Other government document

Acceptable proofs of identification must contain a photo and include:

• An Iowa driver’s license
• Out-of-state driver’s license
• Non-driver identification card
• US passport
• Veteran ID

All forms of ID must be current, valid and contain an expiration date. Voters may cast an absentee ballot at the Dallas County Auditor’s office during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
