Woodward-Granger volleyball falls to Van Meter on Senior Night

WOODWARD, IOWA — Second place in the WCAC volleyball standings was on the line Thursday, with visiting Van Meter prevailing over Woodward-Granger in straight sets.

The Bulldogs won with scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13 to finish 9-1 in WCAC play and 18-10 overall. W-G finished league play 8-2 and is 8-18 overall. Class 3A No. 4 Des Moines Christian (33-6) won the WCAC at 10-0.

W-G will host the annual Norm McCune Invitational Saturday, but used Thursday’s match as an opportunity to salute six seniors. Honored for their play and dedication to the program were Brayten Ashman, Eberle Brimm, Ashley Gerken, Olivia Horsch, Darby Nixon and Samantha Volz.

Audrey Simmons had six assists, Volz five and Nixon won in Thursday’s match. Grace Deputy and Jada Tague each had four kills, with Ashman making three and Volz one.

Nixon’s 13 digs led the hosts, with Tague having six. Simmons and Volz had five digs apiece, Ashman, Bella McDevitt and Lindsay Mescher two each and Gerken one.

The Hawks were accurate on 43-of-49 (88 serves) while recording six aces.

Simmons finished 11-14-3, Volz 8-8-1 and Ashman 4-5-1, with Gerken 2-3-1 while Nixon and Tague were both 7-of-7 and Deputy 4-of-5.

Postseason play for W-G will begin Wednesday when they visit South Hamilton for a Class 2A Region 3 Quarterfinal. South Hardin awaits the Madrid vs. Ogden winner in another quarterfinal, with those winners moving to the semifinal round Oct. 25 at South Hardin. The Region 3 Final will be played Oct. 27 at a site yet to be determined. All games will start at 7 p.m.
