About 30 people braved the rain Thursday morning to gather for the grand opening of Maddie Cakes Bakery in the newly remodeled quarters at 1014 Second St. in downtown Perry.

Maddie Kelderman and Brandon Kelderman are the proprietors of the bakery, and they live in Perry with their 2-year-old daughter, Bryn.

Maddie said she has been a hobby baker pretty well all her life and developed the commercial potential of her sweets in the last two years. The shop offers custom cakes, cookies and cupcakes, along with pies and a daily variety of bars, muffins and cinnamon rolls.

Thursday’s opening-day specialties, for example, included mouth-watering strawberries and cream cupcakes, cookie dough cupcakes, animal cookie confetti cupcakes, peanut butter cup cupcakes, monster cookies, chocolate chip cookies, blueberry muffins, chocolate chip muffins, donuts, gluten-sensitive pumpkin bars and edible-cookie-dough versions of the peanut butter cup cupcakes and chocolate chip cupcakes.

To soak your sweets, try the Italian sodas, iced tea, brewed coffee or iced coffee.

The former offices of Pegasus TV-12 at 1014 Second St. have been beautifully remodeled by Jose Guzman of Perry, and the window seating is sure to draw many local shoppers and students.

The Perry Chamber of Commerce was on hand Thursday morning for a ribbon cutting to welcome the latest shopkeepers to the downtown commercial and historic district.

Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers may call at 515-642-6233 or visit the Maddie Cakes Bakery website.
