GREENFIELD, Iowa — A Jefferson man was shot in both arms Wednesday night at the end of a high-speed chase in Adair County.
Charles Raymond Bradshaw II, 57, of 112 S. Wilson St., Jefferson, was charged with eluding, dominion/control of a firearm by a felon, second-offense possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license denied, suspended, canceled or revoked, reckless driving, speeding and operation without registration.
The incident began about 7:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of S. Division Street in Stuart, where an officer of the Stuart Police Department attempted to stop a 2004 Honda Civic for a traffic violation.
Bradshaw, operating the Honda, failed to stop and a pursuit began that led through Dexter and rural Adair County and ultimately involved the Stuart Police Department, Greenfield Police Department, Guthrie County Sheriff’s office and the Adair County Sheriff’s office.
According to a statement release Thursday by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the pursuit ended in just north of 130th Street on Jordan Avenue in Adair County, where Bradshaw’s vehicle abruptly turned around in the roadway.
A Stuart Police Officer was unable to stop his patrol vehicle, which struck Bradshaw’s vehicle, and the Honda in turn struck a Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff’s vehicle before coming to a stop.
An Adair County Deputy Sheriff “heard a gunshot from the suspect vehicle” and “observed Bradshaw with the firearm in his hand and pointing it outward from the vehicle,” according to the DCI statement.
“The Adair County Deputy did fire his service weapon and struck the suspect in both arms, causing non-life threatening injuries,” the DCI statement said.
A search of Bradshaw’s vehicle disclosed a Kel-Tec P11 9 millimeter handgun and shell casing along with a quantity of methamphetamine and a glass pipe, according to court records.
Bradshaw was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, where he was treated for his injuries before being transported to the Adair County Jail.
Bradshaw was convicted on drug charges in 2010 in Missouri, according to court records.
The DCI statement said the agency was asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Once the investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the Adair County Attorney’s office for review.
As standard procedure, the Adair County Deputy Sheriff who fired his service weapon has been placed on administrative leave, the DCI said. The Adair County Deputy’s name will not be released until he has been interviewed by the DCI.
