Shaomin Yao, 57, of Urbandale was arrested Friday on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault-use or display of weapon.

An Urbandale man was arrested early Friday after allegedly assaulting his son in an effort to evict him.

Shaomin Yao, 57, of 7024 Sheridan Circle, Urbandale, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-use or display of weapon.

The incident began about 1:45 a.m. Friday in the 15000 block of Bryn Mawr Drive in Clive, where officers of the Clive Police Department responded to a report of a domestic assault involving a weapon.

The officers made contact with Yao, who said that he “wanted to kick his adult son” out of the house, but his son would not leave and was locked in his room, according to court records.

Yao said that “he went and got a hammer to break the door down and make” his son “leave the house.”

A witness told the officers that Yao was “angry” and went upstairs to his son’s room allegedly “with a handgun” in order to confront his son, according to court records. After “yelling” at his son “through the bedroom door,” Yao “eventually went down to the basement, retrieved a hammer and went back up to” his son’s “bedroom with both the handgun and the hammer” and “continued yelling through the door,” according to court records.

The victim told the officers that “he couldn’t see what was happening on the other side of the door, but he heard” the witness say to Yao, “Don’t use the gun,” according to court records. The victim called 911.

When asked, Yao directed the officers to the location of a “loaded handgun” that was “tucked into the couch downstairs,” according to court records.

Yao is held in the Dallas County Jail in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.
