W-G cagers come up short against Van Meter

The Woodward-Granger boys had their season end Monday with a loss to Interstate-35.

WOODWARD, Iowa — Visiting Van Meter posted a pair of lopsided wins over Woodward-Granger in WCAC cage play Friday.

The Bulldogs (10-8, 9-3) topped the Hawks (7-13, 5-9), 72-40, in the girls game, with Van Meter (16-1, 14-0) a 90-29 victor over W-G (1-17, 1-14) in the boys contest.

The W-G girls stayed within range in the first half, trailing just 18-12 after eight minutes and 34-23 after 16. A 17-10 edge in the third period pushed the visitors into a 51-33 advantage, with the hosts unable to make up the distance.

Darby Nixon sank one 3-pointer and 12 free throws to finish with a game-high 15 points for W-G. Grace Deputy had 12 points, Lexi Bogardus 11 and Rian Jamison two. Bogardus had two treys.

A total of 11 players scored for the Bulldogs. Zoie Vaught had 16 points, Shae Bernhardt 15 and Finley Netten 12.

Any drama in the nightcap was over quickly, as Van Meter burst to a 26-5 lead after one quarter of play en route to a 50-15 halftime lead.

Brody Nardini topped the Hawk scoring list with 11 points. Jack Meusburger added five points and Josh Hultman four, with Nate Moser tallying three points. Two points apiece from Don David, Chandler Drake and Carter Moran completed the scoring.

Van Meter pulled down 48 rebounds, with 6-6 senior Hunter Hinde clearing 14 boards to top the list.

Hinde scored 18 points and 6-5 senior Clark Fiala 13 points. Chris Schreck added 12 points, Aydn Netten 11 and Michael Banks 10.

The W-G boys host Collins-Maxwell Monday, with both Hawk teams visiting West Central Valley Tuesday. The Hawk boys will then host Central Decatur Thursday.
