Nelson, Snyder advance for Perry wrestlers

WINTERSET, Iowa — Senior Cole Nelson and sophomore Keegan Snyder will wrestle for Perry in the Class 2A District 1 tourney Saturday in Huxley after both advanced from the Sectional 2 meet.

Winterset won the team title with 246 points, with North Polk second at 198. ADM (176) and Woodward-Granger (173) were 3-4, with Perry (152) and Saydel (56) completing the field.

Those who advanced will hit the mats at Ballard Saturday and will face either the champion or runner-up in their weight class from the Sectional 1 meet in Humboldt, which included the hosts as well as Ballard, Gilbert, Nevada, Roland-Story and Southeast Valley.

Nelson (33-4) won the 138-pound bracket with a pin, in 2 minutes, 39 seconds, over Jon Hatchitt (5-8) of ADM. He claimed first with a 3-1 decision against Winterset’s Keegan Jensen (23-8).

Snyder (13-7) was second at 182 and opened with a pin of W-G’s Jackson Potter (16-14) in 1:53. He then lost a major decision, 15-2, in the finals, but advanced automatically on a ‘prior’ after Potter won his consolation match, who had already lost to Snyder.

Tanner Burgin (24-18) finished third at 145 with a 2-2 record. He scored a pin in 5:17, lost by fall and rebounded with a 9-1 major decision, but then suffered a 5-3 decision setback to Ben Smith (32-10, ADM) in a wrestle back.

Bluejay heavyweight Alan Gomez (26-10) was also third. He lost by fall, came back to win a 4-0 decision, but was then automatically bounced after having a prior loss to North Polk’s Cole Sanger, who dropped into the match after a loss in the finals.

Seven Bluejays placed fourth, including Mercedes Ponce (3-10 at 106 pounds), Cristobal Turrado (2-24 at 126) and Samuel Hernandez (4-15 at 195), none who could find a victory in two matches.

Alex Fickbohm (14-18 at 132), Juan Hernandez (7-10 at 152) and Kevin Colin (17-10) were 1-2 and fourth, each winning by pin, with Kain Killmer (17-23 at 170) fourth after finishing 1-2 with a decision.

Gavin Kercheval (12-19 at 120) was 1-1 with a decision in placing fifth, with Taylor Atwell (11-17 at 113) stopped in her one match while to finish fifth while Jose Chavez (7-20 at 160) was 0-2 to place sixth.
