WINTERSET, Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol said Monday the teen driver who was killed early Sunday in a crash in rural Madison County was Jacob Ryan Short, 16, of Indianola.

According to an ISP crash report, Short was driving a 2003 GMS Sierra pickup “at excessive speeds” about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 2400 block of 195th Trail near the Hanson Prairie Reserve when he lost control of the vehicle, which entered the “right ditch” and “struck a tree.”

Short died of injuries sustained in the collision, and three teen passengers were injured in the crash: Halley Renee Brown, 15, of Winterset, Blake Charles Feuring, 17, of Winterset and Cameron Ryan Johnson, 18, of Lorimor.

According to the ISP report, Brown was transported to the Madison County Hospital by personal vehicle. Feuring and Johnson were not transported.

None of the young victims was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the ISP. “Alcohol is suspected in the accident,” which remains under investigation, the report said.

The Madison County Sheriff’s office and Madison County EMS also responded.
