March 24 marks the second anniversary of the first recorded COVID-19 death in Iowa, and Iowa COVID-19 Memorial artist Pam Douglas, whose “Folding Cranes, Enfolding Community” exhibit commemorates the memories of Iowa lives lost to COVID-19, spoke at an event recognizing the two-year milestone on the DMACC Ankeny Campus.

DMACC Ankeny will host the COVID-19 exhibit through the end of the spring semester. Since the exhibit was first installed on Dec. 13, 2021, an additional 3,000 Iowans have died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of virus deaths in Iowa to more than 9,400.

Following her presentation, Douglas helped central Iowans fold cranes. The artist said she will continue to fold cranes and add them to the memorial for any additional COVID-19 deaths that occur in Iowa.

Dan Ivis is the media liaison for DMACC marketing and public relations.
