In order to mark National Crime Victims’ Rights Week for 2022, the DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy will host two special presentations this week on Tuesday and Thursday.

Kacey Barrow-Miner, training director at the Crisis Intervention and Advocacy Center in Perry and Adel, will discuss the victim-centered services provided at the center as well as career opportunities in the field Tuesday from 1:45-3:15 p.m. in the academy’s Criminal Justice Classroom.

Barrow-Miner’s presentation will be open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

Thursday will bring Urbandale Police Department Detective Chad Underwood to Perry for a presentation from 1:45-3:15 p.m. in the academy’s Criminal Justice Classroom. Underwood is a specialist in domestic violence and victims’ rights, and his knowledge is informed by personal experience.

A life-sized timeline of victims’ rights history is on display all week in the hallways of the Perry DMACC, giving particular emphasis to the evolution since the 1960s of legal protections in the U.S. and in come wats a concomitant to the broader movement for women’s rights.

The timeline banners were produced by students in the DMACC graphic design program as were the die-cut stickers and buttons available for visitors. The refreshments were provided by students in the DMACC culinary arts program.

Events marking National Crime Victims’ Rights Week are also taking place at the DMACC Ames, Ankeny, Boone and Urban campuses.

If you intend to attend one or both of the presentations in Perry this week, call the VanKirk Academy in advance so they can better plan for the event. The number is 515-428-8100.
