The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a high wind warning until 7 p.m. and a red flag warning until 9 p.m. for the Perry area.

West winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are forecast.

The red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or soon will. The combination of strong winds and lowering humidity values — dropping to 20-25% by Thursday afternoon — will produce very high to extreme fire danger, and the NWS strongly advises people to refrain from open burning.

Any fires that ignite may spread rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior, the NWS said. Use extreme caution if engaging in any activities that could start a fire.

People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches because damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible.

Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm if possible, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
