Perry High School junior Katelynn Pentico is preparing for a week in Washington, D.C., this month after she was one of two students chosen by Iowa State University to attend the TRIO leadership congress.

Pentico was chosen through the ISU Talent Search for the six-day intensive leadership conference at Georgetown University called the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) 33rd annual National Student Leadership Congress

“Katelynn is kindhearted, dependable and motivated,” said Megan Averill, Pentico’s TRIO Talent Search advisor. “I can always count on her to be at our meetings and get things done. She works hard and does well in her classes. She can make easy conversation with just about anyone. She is a role model, a true leader and really wants to help others and make a positive impact. I think this conference will be great for her and help her hone some of these skills even more.”

Pentico and Marshalltown High School sophomore Natalie Vianey Andrade were nominated by their ISU Talent Search advisors and selected by COE after submitting applications and meeting appropriate academic standards. Students across the U.S. apply for this event.

The National Student Leadership Congress is where TRIO pre-college students come from across the U.S. and territories to Washington, D.C. to collaborate in finding innovative solutions to current social problems.

Highlights of the conference include a mock congress competition, diversity and inclusion training, interactive learning labs, a college and career fair, monuments tour and a day on Capitol Hill.

For more information about the conference, visit the COE website.
