Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn, center, introduced his department’s newest members, Officer Cameron Martinez, left, and Officer James Leber, to the Perry City Council Tuesday night prior to the officers’ swearing in.

The Perry Police Department returned to full strength Tuesday night when the 12th and 13th officers were sworn into their offices by Perry Mayor John Andorf at the regular meeting of the Perry City Council.

Officers James Leber and Cameron Martinez were introduced to the council and the public by Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn before the two Perry natives were sworn in.

Andorf administered the oaths, and each officer did “solemnly swear or affirm” to “support the Constitution of the United States of America and the Constitution of the state of Iowa” and “faithfully and impartially” to “discharge all the duties of the office of the Perry Police Department in Perry, Iowa, as now and hereafter required by law.”

Leber is a 2005 graduate of Perry High School, and Martinez is a 2015 PHS graduate.

The police department was last at full strength in 2019.

The Perry City Council also approved the updating of the assistant police chief position, including the job description and pay rate. The position has been vacant since Vaughn was appointed chief of police in 2014.

Perry Police Department Sgt. James Archer will be promoted to the assistant chief position, Vaughn said, and a further promotion will be made to fill Archer’s sergeant slot.
