An Adel man was arrested Thursday afternoon after allegedly strangling his wife and slamming the door in the face of Adel police.

Nathan John Shanks, 43, of 1805 Main St., Adel, was charged with domestic abuse assault-impeding air/blood flow causing bodily injury, obstruction of emergency communications and interference with officials acts.

The incident began about 4:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Main Street, where officers of the Adel Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

The officers “attempted to make contact with” Shanks, who “slammed the door and refused to come outside,” according to court records.

The officers entered the residence, “grabbed” Shanks by the arm “and forced him to the ground,” where he was handcuffed, according to court records.

The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that Shanks allegedly “grabbed her by the neck with his hand and held her against the wall in the kitchen of their residence,” causing the victim to “have difficulty breathing,” according to court records.

The victim told the officers that while the alleged strangulation was occurring, the victim was “attempting to contact 911 with her cell phone,” and Shanks allegedly “prevented her from making the phone call.”

The officers observed “red marks” on the victim’s neck, according to court records.

Shanks is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $5,600 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 10 in Dallas County District Court.
