There is a nonprofit organization, called Parenting Way Inc., with a mission of helping parents, grandparents and guardians. Their focus is to educate parents for the health, safety and success of children and adolescents.

Parenting Way offers a 10-week class to help parents identify past problem areas and learn alternate ways to guide children and help them develop to their best.

Parents may join the ten-week course at any point. you don’t have to wait until the class comes around to Week One. So, for instance, if you decide to take Parenting Way and they’re on Week Four, you can jump in and keep going until they get back to Week Four.

The course is offered continuously in the daytime and evening.

Classes are held in the Valley Junction area of West Des Moines. Since the coronavirus pandemic, Parenting Way classes are also available virtually.

Parenting Way urges all parents to be alert for signs of stress in their own parenting and in their communities. They offer tips to help protect children you know.

You may register for classes or ask questions by emailing from the Parenting Way website or by calling Family Directions of Iowa at 515-255-9490.

Ann Cochran is the health navigation coordinator in the Dallas County Public Health Department.
