WIC is the Women, Infants and Children program, marking its 50th year of helping pregnant and parenting families. WIC focuses on nutrition and normal development in children prenatal up to age 5.

During WIC appointments, a nutrition specialist can answer questions about healthy eating for the whole family. Pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women are given support regarding their special nutrition needs.

Generally, babies and infants are weighed, height is measured and iron levels are checked at least annually.

Families participating in WIC receive a debit card that’s loaded monthly. Funds can be used at participating stores for food items that match the family’s needs, such as infant formula, cereal, protein sources or fruits.

Stores carrying WIC items are listed online.

You may check whether you’re eligible for WIC and apply online. There are currently four WIC sites in Dallas County: the Adel Public Library, the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, the Redfield Medical Clinic and the Waukee Area Christian Services.

Close to but not quite within Dallas County are WIC sites in Earlham or Grimes.

Unlike in years past, many WIC resources are available online and by phone, making life easier for busy young families.
