Verla Elliott, 87, of Woodward passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry, Iowa.

Verla Jean Jensen Elliott was born Oct. 16, 1935, at home in rural Greenfield, Iowa, to Jens Peter Christian and Anna Lorena Jensen.

She graduated from Greenfield Public School.

Verla was united in marriage to M. Dean Elliott, son of James Earl and Mary (Burrell) Elliott, in Greenfield on May 20, 1956. Together they were happily married for more than 50 years.

She enjoyed her job as a bookkeeper at Iowa Paint and Iowa Pork, and she loved her longtime work as high school secretary at Woodward-Granger.

Verla was an active member of the Woodward United Methodist Church and Envision Woodward. She loved her time with her JFA “sisters.”

With her husband Dean, Verla helped grow the family’s Century Farm.

She loved having coffee and playing cards, especially Bridge, with friends at the Woodward Social Center.

Verla had a talent for designing and remodeling her home.

Through the years, she enjoyed camping, boating, travelling, gardening and crossword puzzles.

Verla was involved with the Democratic Party.

She was a blue-ribbon pie maker, an avid reader and a history buff.

Verla spent hundreds of hours watching her daughters and grandsons at sporting and musical events.

She was a proud of her Danish heritage and being part of the Woodward community.

In death she rejoins her husband, Dean Elliott; parents, Chris, and Anna Jensen; sister, Ruby Phillips; and brother, Kenneth (Billie) Jensen.

Left to cherish Verla’s memory are her daughters, Kathleen Elliott Connor, Deanna Lee Elliott-Stoering and Donna Elliott; “sons,” Don Connor and Mark Stoering; grandchildren, Sean Connor, David Stoering, Michael Connor and Derek Stoering; brother, Darrell (Wilda) Jensen; cousins; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Woodward United Methodist Church in Woodward. The service will be streamed on Facebook. Visitation will be Sunday, March 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Woodward United Methodist Church in Woodward. Burial will be at the Woodward Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to American Lung Association or Woodward United Methodist Church and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care. Online condolences may be left at www.carrisfuneralhome.com.
