The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a freeze warning for the Perry area from 1-9 a.m. Saturday alongside a freeze watch that remains in effect until Sunday at 9 a.m.
Under the freeze warning, sub-freezing temperatures as low as the upper 20s are expected. Temperatures under the freeze watch are expected in the mid 20s.
The area of the freeze warning is mainly along and south of U.S. Highway 30.
The frost and freeze conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and could possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.
To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes, they should be wrapped, drained or allowed to drip slowly. People with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
