Ed Tomas, 75, of Tingley, Iowa, and formerly of rural Minburn died Thursday, June 15, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 27the at Powers Funeral Home in Afton, Iowa. Doug Wilson will officiate. Burial will follow the service at 12:30 p.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa. Military rites will be performed by the Theodore J. Martens VFW Post 1797 of Creston. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Monday, June 26, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton.
Edward Allen Tomas was born Jan. 19, 1948, in Norway, Iowa, to Emil Joseph Tomas and Erma Eleanor (Smith) Tomas.
He was educated in the Norway School District.
Ed served in the Vietnam War while in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971.
On Dec. 18, 1968, he was united in marriage to Barbara Elaine Bauer in Perry, Iowa. After marrying, they settled in the Minburn and Adel area, where he worked for the Firestone service station and Golden Harvest Seed Co. in Perry. He also drove a semi-tractor trailer, transporting livestock for Wick’s Trucking, and farmed with his wife, Barbara, on her family homestead, all while raising their four wonderful children.
Ed then continued his love for farming at the Dallas County Home, attending to their farming endeavors. In 1997 the family moved to the Afton, Iowa, area, and Ed drove semi for Big and Small of Osceola, hauling grain, and he drove for Crestland Coop of Creston. He later drove with his son, Eddie L. Tomas Trucking, retiring in 2010.
Edward served a term as president of the Central Dallas School Board. He was also a member of the Dallas County Farm Bureau Board, American Legion in Minburn and later in Ellston. He umpired many of his kids’ sports games as well as helped coach many of those teams.
Ed is survived by his wife, Barbara Tomas of Tingley; his sons, Eddie (Sheri) Tomas of Afton and Billy (Jill) Tomas of Shannon City; daughters, Janet (Corey) Osterhout of Urbandale and Bobbie (Gary) Mash of Adel; two sisters, Nancy Emanuel of Cedar Rapids and Beverly Boddicker of Fairfax, Iowa; three brothers, Emil Tomas of Swisher, Iowa, and twin brothers, Melvin Tomas of Norway and Marvin Tomas of South Carolina; nine grandchildren, Kessler, Kolby and Kenna Tomas, Deserae and Logan Osterhout, Gaven and Rorie Tomas and Gabriella and Nicholas Mash; one step-granddaughter, Quynn Foster; and many extended family members.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Emanuel and Richard “Butch” Boddicker; and one sister-in-law, Diane Tomas.
