Perry High School recently announced its new participation in the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy program, which aims to recognize and celebrate student proficient multiple languages.

PHS counselor Angelica Cardenas initiated Perry’s involvement in the program by reaching out to representatives from the Iowa Department of Education in the spring 2023.

At the heart of the Perry High School program is the arrival of Maribel Hernandez, who will spearhead the Spanish Heritage program at PHS. Cardenas said that Hernandez is an experienced and passionate teacher who brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Hernandez graduated from Perry High School, DMACC and Iowa State University with a major in world languages and cultures. With five years of teaching Spanish at Greene County High School under her belt, Hernandez said she is eager to inspire and empower Perry High School students in their language-learning journey.

She will work closely with veteran PHS teacher Jami Blum, who has more than 20 years of experience in teaching Spanish for college credit at the high school.

“I firmly believe in the transformative power of learning a second language,” Hernandez said. “It allows individuals to forge connections with people from diverse cultures,
fosters effective communication and enhances future employment prospects.”

The Iowa Seal of Biliteracy program, established by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds in 2018, has becomes popular as an emblem of language proficiency, Hernandez said. In order to receive the Seal, students must demonstrate competence in two languages by successfully completing a comprehensive four-part examination encompassing speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.

To pass and receive the Iowa Seal of Biliteracy, students must attain an Intermediate Level score or higher.

Upon completion of the exam, successful students will be awarded a prestigious medal, Hernandez said. This accomplishment will also be noted on their transcripts, serving as a testament to their linguistic abilities.

“We are thrilled to implement this program at Perry High School,” said PHS Principal Dan Marburger. “The Seal of Biliteracy provides our students with an exceptional opportunity to
showcase their language proficiency and celebrate their multicultural competencies. It
aligns perfectly with our commitment to preparing students for success in a global
society.”

The program’s full implementation will take several years, with the first recipients
expected in 2025. Registration for the fall 2023 is now available online. For more information, call the Perry High School at 515-465-3503.
