Joel Gonzales Rojas, 45, of Des Moines was arrested Sept. 16 on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault-display or use of a weapon.

A Des Moines man was arrested in Perry after allegedly brandishing a firearm during the course of a domestic dispute with a Perry woman.

Joel Gonzales Rojas, 45, of 3848 E. 14th St., Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-display or use of a weapon.

The incident began about 11:45 p.m. Sept 16 in the 1200 block of W. Second Street, where officers of the Perry Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance “involving a firearm,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with Gonzales Rojas, who presented with “slurred speech and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage resonating from his person,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that Gonzales Rojas began “to verbally abuse her and at the same time retrieved a firearm,” according to court records. The victim said that “he did not point it at her but had it in his possession.”

The victim told the officers that Gonzales Rojas “has done this before,” and she “believed that he was capable of using it on her during this incident,” according to court records.

The officers inspected the firearm and determined it “to be unloaded,” according to court records.

Gonzales Rojas was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Sept. 27 in Dallas County District Court.
