The members of the Perry Lions Club recently held their annual fall roadside cleanup project, clearing trash along a two mile section of Iowa Highway 141 from D to F avenues west of Perry.

The Lions have conducted this public-service ritual annually for 20 years.

This year’s collection netted some 400 pounds of trash, including not only the usual cans and plastic bottles but also a large piece of plywood, a three-foot-square of remnant carpet, an overstuffed pillow and a pair of men’s black Speedo underwear.

The Lions place the refuse in the orange bags at the base of the sign for later collection by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
