With the National Weather Service’s latest winter weather advisory for the Perry area, in effect until 6 a.m. Friday, and wind chill advisory, in effect from midnight until noon Friday, the DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy closed early Thursday afternoon, and the city of Perry snow ordinance took effect.

Snow of three to five inches of blowing snow and wind chills as low as minus 25 degrees are forecast for much of northern and western Iowa, including the Perry area.

The heaviest rate of snowfall is expected in central Iowa around the time of the Thursday evening commute. The NWS said the snow will be dry and powdery, making it highly susceptible to blowing and drifting.

As the snow tapers off over night, the winds will pick up out of the northwest, gusting to 25 to 35 mph through Friday morning. Temperatures will drop as the winds increase, with bitterly cold wind chills in the 20s below zero Friday.

Travelers should expect slippery road conditions and reduced visibility due to the blowing
snow. The hazardous conditions could impact the commutes Thursday evening and Friday
morning.

The bitterly cold winds could be repeated on Friday and Saturday nights, the NWS said.
