The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a red flag warning for the Perry area from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday as low humidity, strong winds and dry fuels combine to create critical fire conditions.

The warning covers much of central and southeast Iowa, along and southeast of a line from Atlantic to Boone to Waterloo.

A red flag warning means that any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. South and southwest winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts of 30 to 40 mph, and humidity as low as 20% are forecast for Sunday afternoon, and outdoor burning is not  recommended, the NWS said.

Along with Dallas County, the red flag warning is in effect in Hardin, Grundy, Black Hawk, Boone, Story, Marshall, Tama. Guthrie. Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Cass, Adair, Madison, Warren, Marion, Mahaska, Adams, Union, Clarke, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Taylor, Ringgold, Decatur, Wayne, Appanoose, Davis and Butler counties.
