Four officers of the Perry Police Department received Friday the Iowa Medal of Merit in recognition of their courage in swiftly responding to the shooting at Perry High School on Jan. 4.

“In January, our community was rocked by the tragic attack at Perry High School,” said U.S. Rep. Zack Nunn of Bondurant, who presented the medals to the officers on Friday. “The Perry Police Department helped save lives with their courageous and rapid response.”

The four law enforcement officers honored with the Iowa Medal of Merit were Police Chief Eric Vaughn, Officer Micaela Zagar, Officer Cameron Martinez and School Resource Officer Josh Moore.

“It’s my privilege to honor these men and women in uniform for their willingness to run into danger to keep our community safe,” said Nunn. “We can’t say thank you enough!”

Vaughn thanked the congressman for the medals and said his officers’ courage and commitment to duty were evident when they faced the critical situation at PHS.

“Our officers were honored to be recognized for their response and actions on Jan. 4,” said Vaughn. “Our training had taught us how to respond to a situation we hoped we would never have to.”

Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh was also present at the ceremony, praising the officers and saying their rapid response and unwavering dedication saved lives and ensured the safety of students and staff.

“We appreciate all you did,” said Cavanaugh. “We’re still healing from what happened. We’re going to get through it. We appreciate you all, and everyone’s efforts through this whole time.”

The Iowa Medal of Merit recognizes heroes in Iowa communities, including law enforcement, who serve the public honorably.
