The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Perry area until 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Scattered damaging winds, gusting to 75 mph, and scattered hail events to 1.5 inches are possible, the NWS said.
Along with Dallas County, the 50 counties in the southern half of Iowa are affected by the watch.
In addition, a flash flood warning for the Perry area is in effect until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. As much as 4 to 5 inches of rain have fallen across portions of central Iowa, and an additional 1 to 2 inches are possible Tuesday.
Flash flooding is already occurring in Dallas County and 37 other Iowa counties, primarily in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as
other poor drainage and low-lying areas.
The NWS advises motorists to turn around when the encounter flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
