A Perry man was arrested Friday night for drunk driving with a pistol after law enforcement noticed the light on his license plate was burned out.

Donald Carl Greenwood, 76, of 17656 H Ave., Perry, was charged with second-offense OWI and possession or carrying of dangerous weapons while under the influence and was issued a warning for improper registration plate lamp.

The incident began about 11 p.m. Friday on Iowa Highway 141 near the 141 mile marker, where a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff responded to a report of a vehicle “swerving all over the roadway” in the vicinity of Woodward.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop on Iowa Highway 141 near Iowa Street in Perry on a 2007 Saturn Vue, operated by Greenwood.

The deputy made contact with Greenwood and allegedly “could detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle,” according to court records.

Greenwood blew a .124 in a preliminary breath test, according to court records.

A loaded Astra 9mm handgun was found “on the driver-side, center-console area” of the vehicle, according to court records.

Greenwood is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 16 in Dallas County District Court.

Greenwood was convicted of first-offense OWI in 2018 in Madison County District Court.
