Kyla Ann Richards, 24, of Perry was arrested Saturday on charges of first-offense public intoxication, child endangerment and assault on persons in certain occupations.

A Perry woman was arrested early Saturday after allegedly abandoning her infant and assaulting a paramedic.

Kyla Ann Richards, 24, of 1024 14th St., Perry, was charged with first-offense public intoxication, child endangerment and assault on persons in certain occupations.

The incident began about 1 a.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Second Street, where officers of the Perry Police Department responded to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The officers made contact with Richards, who seemed to be “hysterical and unable to form a proper sentence,” according to court records.

Richards’ words and actions led the officers to believe that she needed medical assistance, and the Dallas County EMS was paged to the scene.

Once Richards was in an ambulance, a paramedic “was attempting to collect a urine sample” from Richards, and Richards “kicked the victim on her right arm, causing urine to spill out of the urine collect device and going all over the victim,” according to court records.

Further investigation revealed that Richards allegedly left her 13-month-old child home alone for about 30 minutes. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services was notified of the “abandonment,” according to court records.

Richards was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 31 in Dallas County District Court.
